First post!! okay pics are 2 follow, i'm at school right now... I have a 17' Hydrodyne sith 292/302 ford reverse rotation, all original. Eaton outdrive seems to work fine. After getting in the water for the first time with the boat (restoring for 2 years now) I was starting to plane out at a very low rpm (no tach yet), then, once i gave a little more throddle, the boat seemed to cavitate (or at least spin a lot rpm maxed and little go). I have heard multiple opinions, and don't want to waste my money on taking apart the outdrive if i don't have to. Some people say it's the 'slip-coupling' between the outdrive and the motor (i don't know if it has one), secondly, i am told it may be cavitation and to get a new propellar. I am leaning towards this (less work). How do i size a new one, assuming someone installed the wrong one? I can troll in the water with the 185 hp motor, but can't go any faster. And being it's age, when engagint the drive gear with the throddle, should i feel the gears 'meshing' to engagge the drive? Does anyone have some shop drawings on these outdrives, or a known gear ration with a model/serial number?
I bought the boat for $500.00 and the owner said he couldn't get it running. It used to be a texas boat (known by the identification numbers) and it came to canada some time ago. I had the boat running the next day and stripped it all down to re-gelcoat the boat and clean it all up. I put a new floor, new upholstery, and tuned up the motor and rebuild the carb. She sounds great (no mufflers). I love this boat, but i can't find crap for shop manuals or shop drawings. Any help would be appreciated, i'll send some pics when i get home tonight.

What size prop is on it now? Also engage gear with out engine running and see if prop will spin around its hub. If so its a bad prop. If not it still could be the prop. Was motor trimmed alll the down (had to ask)?

yes i was all the way down, no adjustable trim, just 3 stops, here are some pics, i don't know the prop size. I have engaged the drive with the motor off, and i can stand on the prop, and it will not budge.
    Thanks for the help

I have heard that a mid 60's Johnson outboard prop will fit.

It could be the prop hub spinning inside the prop. The easiest first step would be to take the prop off and take it to a prop shop to check it out and measure the pitch.

The 292 and 302 were way different motors. The 260, 289, and 302 are the same family.

You will probably have to measure the gear ratio. Turn the motor enough that the prop turns 1 turn. The amount you turned the motor is the gear ratio. It is probably around 1.5 or 1.6.

A good prop for a 1.5 is around 13.5 to 14.25 diameter by 17 pitch. A 1.6 gear could use a 19 for wide open cruising and a 17 for skiing and watch the rpm. Same diameter.

I have no idea what the coupling looks like, but on a Mercruiser a slipping coupling would be easy to spot with a visual inspection. The rubber donut extrudes out of them and it is rare unless they are mis-aligned.

If you do a google search for the drive I think it will lead you to a forum where there is a guy that works on them. I have heard that parts are difficult, but there are used drives around.

Check the bellows around the drive shaft carefully if there is one. A leak there on a Merc will sink the boat.

I have an owner's manual for the 1968 Eaton 200 Drive, but it doesn't look like yours. I also have the manual for Ford Interceptor Models 165/190/210 if it's useful.

This is the e-mail address of a guy that claims he just rebuilt two eatons with new sealed bearings and new silent chains on another forum. You might want to check him out.
