It's been a while since I posted, but still check the site every so often.

So I have the ability to pick up a Honda 90HP 4-stroker for really cheap including controls. This would go on my '67 18' Dyne. The hydraulic ram for the trim is bad, but other than that, the motor runs excellent. Can anyone comment on the type of performance I shoud expect? I was planning on putting on a 150 e-tec or similar if I ever came across one out here. The problem is, this deal is too good to pass up, but will I be happy with that motor?

The good news is that in California's hotbed of environmentalists where I live, these four strokes hold their value because some lakes do not allow two strokes anymore. So at least the motor would be easy to pass on if I bought it but was unhappy.

Can anyone share their thoughts? Even if you don't have the exact setup, I know there are guys here that will know what I should expect with 90HP on the back.

    Thanks,

    JB

I can attest to that, living in Southern California 2 of the 5 lakes within 10 miles of me don't allow 2-stokes anymore. (Including the newest and largest lake in SoCal Diamond Valley Lake). I am interested in knowing the answer to this question also.

You can expect about 38 mph top end out of it with pretty slow hole shot. It just depends what you want to use it for. They are quiet and the fuel economy would be excellent.

I drove one with that set up about 10 years ago. I think Must Ski is about right. It could have been propped down more for more hole shot and less speed.

What do you want to do with it?

    Jim,

Your point is a good one. I want to just play with it, teach my son how to drive it, teach the kids how to ski behind it, etc. We have several other bigger boats that we primarily use, so this one probably won't get used as much. Having said that, the 90HP didn't seem like a horrible option.

However, I draw a parallel to my 1965 GTO that I restored back in 2000 - the motor was blown, but that didn't mean I was going to go out and find the first 326 I could find, right? It had to have the 389 with three deuces because that's what that car wanted. Know what I mean? Sort of seems like these Dynes need some power back there!

I think it will be fine for the use you describe. Prop it down so it will pull since you don't have to worry about top speed. The boat is nicely balanced with that motor in my opinion.

I have a 150 on mine which I think is plenty for family use, even with big slalom skiers. It pulls pretty hard with an un-cupped 17 pitch prop which is about equivalent to a cupped 15.

Show ski use is a different story. They regularly pull multiple skiers and can use the power.

For family use I think a small block motor is plenty.

My son in law has a 75 on his 17.6 Dyne. It is a lake restriction. It pulls him up just fine.

Not sure if you want to see it really or not. I haven't done anything to it since I got it, and it was already stripped down then. A link to my original thread a couple years back is here:
