I recently aquired a classic hydrodyne with a volvo penta I/O 4cy BB70 engine. I noticed gear oil leaking from the drive bellows. My questions are, first, is there supposed to be oil inside the bellows, or do I have a leaking seal? Second, is it possible to remove the stern drive without first removing the engine? The engine does not mount to anything other than the transom. I'm not real sure what year model it is but I think it is a late 1950s or early 1960s.
The drive is probably an Eaton or Volvo. There is information on the web for both. Oil should probably not be in the bellows. The drive probably needs to come off first. If it is a Volvo, look here and at the parent site: http://www.marinepartsexpress.com/vp_engine_finder.htm jim
The stern drive is a volvo. I removed it today and it was really very simple, all that was required was to remove the steering shaft and two pins that hold the fork on, the drive just slid off of the splined shaft. It appears that oil is supposed to be in the drive bellows to lube the u-joints and the engine output shaft bearing.
