I opted to convert my I/O to an outboard before they became rare and because I wanted to redesign the aft deck and splashwell.

One of the issues that some say prevents the 18 to be certified now is the need to demonstrate level flotation when swamped. My redesign helps that situation as well by giving considerably more room for flotation under the rear deck. Personally I think that the reason the boat is no longer being built is lack of demand. The other issues could be addressed, including the 130 horsepower limit.

Since this modification requires cutting up the rear deck anyway, a transom repair could easily be done at the same time without removing the whole deck.

I know some of you are interested in restoration to original, so this article will not interest you.

There is really no need for the deep splashwell unless you are running the inline 6. I think it looks dated so when I converted the boat I designed a new splashwell. The diagonal line in the picture is a reflection.

The cables do touch, but they have lasted many years. I do have to remember to turn the engine to the right when tilting way up to ease the bend in the cables. I have forgotten many times with no ill effects.

Another mod is to make the well narrower. The 18 has enough splashwell width to mount twins. Since I am running single engine the width is not required. This gives a wider rear deck if you want to run swim platforms.

I apologize for the dirty boat. I need to clean it. If I did this again I would make the transom 21 inches high. I am running the motor 21 1/4 above the bottom and I think it could go higher. This would make the splash well shallower at the rear for a more modern look. The obvious way to do this is to cut the rear deck off, modify the splashwell and replace. This would be a good time to replace the transom if needed.

    Jim,

    I have a couple questions.

    1. Why is a deeper well needed for the inline sixes?
    2. You have a wrap around plate; is this to raise the engine?

    Thanks,
    Dave

I have never measured it, but I assume because they are taller and therefore extend further into the boat when fully tilted up.

No, the wrap around plat was to stiffen the transom, and I do not recommend it.
