I am new to the forum but I grew up skiing behind my family’s 18 foot twin rig that we bought from Hodag Water Shows in the early 80s. It is the one that had white Johnson 115s. It has had a single Evinrude 150 since the early 90s that has always been a great running motor. The boat hasn’t seen action in at least 5 years due to a steering cable failure that I knew would mean replacing the helm and wheel. The boat had a dual cable helm with an old school square mount steering wheel. I don’t think we ever replaced anything related to the steering in all these years. Today I finally installed the new parts and I turned it over to my dad for a test. It ran well considering it has had so much time on the shelf. Hopefully tomorrow I’ll get to ski behind it. Anyone remember this boat?
Wow I think that is the first Hydrodyne I drove! I was the pickup boat driver for 4 years in the mid 70's
Wow! What a small world! The hodags had 2 Hydrodynes in the early 80s and ours was the older of the two. I remember helping my father replace the stringers in the mid 80s. Meanwhile I was skiing on the “newer” (by one year) boat in the show. For a long time I have dreamed of seeing the Dyne fixed up. Right now I’m not sure if I would prefer a twin rig or a bigger single engine (250?). Which do you think would be better? Before that could happen, the transom will have to be inspected and possibly restored.
I have a 72 which is undergoing a keel up restoration but I haven't worked on it for awhile due to working on my new house. Its upside down on the trailer in the garage waiting for me. I'm setting it up as a twin because I really enjoyed driving the twins. Other forum members have singles in the 250 range which works well - your 150 is fine for regular family skiing. Fuel efficiency would favor a larger single over twins. Prop selection is of course the most important factor and is wholly dependent on what you are doing. Can you post a picture of the instrument panel?
