hello, i just started to do my restoration by removing all the built in seating which the wood was rotten, tore out all the outdoor carpet, removed the two stern fuel tanks and removed any built in boxes sitting on the sub floor that were screwed down and rotten, the sub floor seems very solid except where some screws went through the fiberglass sub floor so my delema is, do i want to tear the sub floor out and replace it now.

Pat, you might try some exploratory holes with a 3/8 drill or cutouts through the top glass skin with a 1-inch holesaw over the existing holes to see if you have a small rot promlem or a large one. If it were me and I suspected a rot issue, the deck (sub-floor) gets cut out and re-done to get rid of any question marks at present or future.

I'd rip out the sub floor. The flotation used back then was open cell and any water gets trapped. My "flotation" weighed a couple hundred pounds. If you are careful, you might be able to save the stringers, assuming they are not rotted.

ty i have begun to remove the sudfloor as there is rot, the foam is wet as well in many places so it is coming out. The stringers are covered with fiberglass but i do not think they were sealed properly as they are full of rot so they will come out as well, i am not sure what i will do with the foam once removed, do i replace it or look for an alternative if in the future there happens to be water do not want to have a foam soaking it up adding hundreds of pounds of wet weight, of course the plan is to replace everything properly and seal it so water never gets in again. ty again.

Sounds like a total rip-out to me. How is the core?

TJ. I would agree that the floor is needing to be replaced. The rear fuel tanks look like they are stained with a water mark as if the boat sat on the trailer or lift with water in the hull at a list/angle but with no history of the boat. Will not try to explain the potential core issues which are in your back yard, if jeprodized.

You have an end grain core. I don't recall one of those going bad.

yes a total rebuild of the sub floor, stingers and transom. It looks like someone had done a sub floor before and made a real mess, there was no bulsa wood under the foam or stringers just the fiberglass hull. should i add bulsa if i can find it or something else as i want it done right

you are right about the water stains on the tanks, the previous owners seemed to not care about water sitting in the uncovered boat, i am going to pull the bow tank out as well and replace them all with new tanks after the wood work and floor is complete, going to be a much bigger project then i thought but if i can get help like this it will be done right thank you all for the support.
