Help: 1969 18' Tournament skier twin Mercury 1350s restoration

    I agree a Searay is a good boat and a Bayliner is more of a cookie cutter production boat. You get what you pay for. Dynes have a far more interesting background in that from what I know you had to special order one until someone took over the factory and/or molds and started a semi-new line with the Hydrodyne name. Then Dynaski picked up the torch and ran with it.

    Reference my earlier comment about guns and security systems - that was not aimed at any forum member but at any trollers that might cruise this site. Dave did call upon arrival and I walked out to meet him and his wife in the driveway. He is a regular guy just like all the rest of us with a love of boats. Sorry if I ruffled any feathers with that post.

    I feel that if a red blooded American Hydrodyner has poured blood, sweat, and beers into the hours of life required to restore his or her Hydrodyne to a level necessary for satisfaction, then it becomes a component of the restorer's life. Sure it's just a fiberglass product. With the added value and benefit of enhancing the life of the aforementioned restorer's family and friends. Place a premium on the past,present, and future value of the craft. Then take precautions to avoid losing this piece of your life. Not a big deal. TJ has a commute back and forth. Cameras and whatever else is necessary to protect property and assets seems only rational to me.

    Those look good! I think I could switch mine, but they work fine as is. They don't have the squeeze releases. There are spacers between the boxes to make room. If I swap it, I guess I'd move the spacers to the right side.

    If you have what I think you do you should be fine as is - considering the lack of trim and shift detent.

    I have a general question for the forum. Dave asked me about a transom plate and I did not have an answer. My boat came with one but it is drilled for a single and since I am going twins... What is the purpose of a transom plate? Mine was made of aluminum and I can't see how much more strength an aluminum plate would add. Maybe if it was made of stainless steel but the cost would be high. What are the pro's and con's of a transom plate?

    I would use plates on the inside and out. They help distribute the loads, stabilize the mounting bolt holes, which makes sealing them easier, and protect the finish. The ones on the inside help prevent crushing too. I have seen them in stainless, but i think that is overkill and makes the drilling harder.

    Jim - do you really think I need this considering I have 3 knees and 2 motorwell knees? I plan on alot of glass to tie the motorwell to the splash well on both sides and to the rest of the hull because of how you told me that it all is an integrated construction to spread loads over as much of the hull as possible. On the inside I plan on large washers to help distribute motor loads to the transom which has several layers of 17 oz bi-ax on the transom. With all of my knees tied into the hull I am not sure if the extra expense of having an aluminum plate is worth the additional expense.

    Sorry Dave but sometimes we go on tangents on a member's thread. Small forum - etc and again I am not trying to hijack your thread.

    T&H Marine makes transom plates that go on the inside to help spread the load out and not gouge up the fiberglass.

    You can find them on E Bay.
