Just got a message back from our rope guy, yes, we used to use 1/2" poly E, but can not find it any more. So he is looking for something new. The larger ones are 3/4" poly E, but are pretty tough to work with and take up way too much space in your hand when the boat is leaving.

Must-ski: Any idea which one of the styles at ropeinc.com you are using? Or at least the color of it, as it looks like some of their ropes are color speciffic. I am assuming it is braided so it is spliceable?

I think it is the AmSteel 12 strand. It is pretty easy to splice and yes it is braided. Much easier to work with on the dock than the Poly E stuff in my opinion.

The amsteel 12 strand only goes up to 3/8". Is it maybe the amsteel blue? $6/foot sounds a bit spendy.

I will have to try to find the email where I ordered it. We paid about 80 cents per foot for it.

Would normal poly rope 12mm be OK for up to 6 skiers?

Poly E (ethylene?) would most likely be fine. Poly P (propylene?) would probably be too stretchy. You would end up getting a slingshot off the dock, then slack, then tight again. You want to try to keep the stretch fairly low. The 1/2" (12mm) poly E we use (but can't find any more) is enough for 6 couples (6 guys with 6 girls doing shoulder starts). You will want to make sure it's braided and not twisted though.

I like 80 cents per foot a lot more than $6! Let me know if you find it. We are on a hunt for something new.

I have never done this, but I think I would look at the tensile strength instead of being hung up on a diameter. It you buy the cheap poly stuff you have to go up to 1/2 diameter to get the strength. I would consider buying the more expensive stronger stuff and go down in size and still have a higher strength. That would help on the price and from what I have read be stronger and certainly easier to handle.

Certainly one of the rope suppliers could steer you to a stronger low stretch rope.

    Thanks Everybody

Yesterday I was in the local marine shop and asked them. They had some 8mm low stretch rope they recommended but it was $6.50/meter. Would have been a lot better by the roll but still a bit much for now. I spent $500 in there yesterday.

They happened to have a roll of 12mm ski rope which isn't something they'd normally stock so I got a great deal on that. It might be stretchy but hopefully it will be sufficient for round one of what I want to do. Looks like I might need to get something better though still.

Our skis are closer to fence size than fence pailing so it should be OK

I still need to work out an attachment mechanism. What do you guys use? Whatever carribenas etc are necessary I'd rather get the right ones first (not cheap starters like I did with the rope).

    Thanks again,

    Greg

We use climbing carabiners for attaching the ropes to the leader (trunk). All of the good ones have a load rating on them. The aluminum ones we use are around a 23 kN rating, and they last 2-3 years before exploding. Sometimes they get double up. We also found some steel ones that are around 45 kN rating. The only time those break is when they don't get latched properly.
