    Hi Mark:

Yes; carpet is simply rolled over the bulkhead (no cut) and trimmed along the base. This was the way both of the boats were carpeted originally by the factory. The bott joint seam is a little tricky with the hull curves and chine coutour but if you get the large piece squared up nicely and glued in, the smaller footwell piece goes pretty well. Also as you glue down the bigger piece, work in stages. That is glue the flat deck and let setup, then glue to the start of the chine and let setup, then deal with the chine (shapped and stretched by hans and the J roller doesn't fit), then the short vertical above the chine.

Hope this helps and makes sense,

It does nelp and it makes sense. Thank you.

So do you cut the seam line up the sides of the hull, at the front of the floor, after you've essentially glued it in up to that point or do you somehow mark where the seams are going to be and then pull the carpet back and use a straight edge to cut the seam?

Greg - thanks! I ended up getting it from McMaster-Carr. I needed something that could grip a 3/4 inch distance. It went smoothly. There are some areas that don't sit down quite flat that I'm going to need to heat up a little but I'm happy with the results overall. This is an endless project...

    Hi Mark:

As I recall, I glued in the larger piece on the floor, placed a small piece of plywood as a cutting board lined on the side I was working on and used a 2 foot carpenters square to make a clean cut, lined up with the front of the bulkhead, and fitted the piece dry before glueing. Also, its ok if you come about 1/3 way up the boat on each side gluing the sides but you want to make the square cut before getting too far. I glued the rear in all the way and then dry fit the smaller piece before glueing. Again, leave maybe a 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch of excess to deal with the butt joint. You can always trim some away but it gets real hard to stretch.

All excellent advice. Thank you so much!

I'm going to get different adhesive just to be sure I'm using the right stuff. I probably won't get to the rest of this now until after the holiday weekend, unfortunately. I wish the boat would be ready for this weekend but that just ain't going to happen!

    Hi Mark:

I never did get around to asking you but what type of carpet did you purchase? I used a product that I brought from Boat US called Aquaturf. It had a little bit of strecch and maybe 1/4 inch nap. Real easy to work with when using a J roller. My only regret was that I chose blue instead of dark grey. I've had folks spill an occasional soda or dark beverage and need to hit the deck with a power washer to get the stains out this weekend. I was hoping to get out for a shake down tomorrow night but will look to thursday night. I haven't even been in the water myself for some skiing this year (we usually start the last week of April), I've got a highfive 17 pitch that I'm dying to test out.

I bought my carpet from Cabellas. It is their best seller, grey plush, 8' wide roll. I think it was the cheaper of the carpets they have on their website because my boat guy here told me that it is good stuff and reasonably priced.

With gas prices where they are, I don't think I can afford to actually pull my boat up north right now behind the suburban (mine is an older one that gets about, oh... 10 miles to the gallon) so maybe it is just as well that it isn't done!

    Hey Mark:

Just curious to know if you got any further with the carpet project. Crappy weather up here but I managed to get the 75 dyne started up. ,,,,and when does summer start?....

Nope. I was up in Manitowish Waters, WI over the weekend. I plan to go full force here now that I'm back. I'm going to pick up some of the adhesive that you recommended for the rest of the job.

    I'll keep you posted!

Is the attached the right stuff? I see that it is sold on some marine sales websites for boat carpet. It is neoprene based. I had my wife pick up a gallon today. If this doesn't look like the right stuff and you happen to check this post can you just let me know. Otherwise, I may continue with the carpet installation tonight. Thanks!
