I have an opportunity to purchase a '73 or '74 Hydrodyne Twin Rig with 2 - 125 Mercs. It has new carpet, new seats and new tarp. It also has a heavy duty tandem trailer. The owner is someone I know very well. I know it has been well maintained and not used hard. More weekend cruising and light water skiing (mainly on weekends) in a very clean lake. The engines are '71 and '72 model 125 Mercs (they have matching engines covers) and have been pretty much babied. I would say it's as close to cherry as you could find for one of these Dynes! I had a twin rig for about 15 years and sold it many years ago and I am still kicking myself for it. So, I want to jump on this one.

Thus, we are trying to figure out a fair value to agree on. I've looked all over the internet and can't find a comparable one to it. It's not a negotiation problem, but more we don't know what figure to start at. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!
    Thanks,
    Rick

p.s. I can't believe I found this forum... This is cool...

Well Congrats on finding the forum.

I also own a 73 twin with merc 115s on it. You can see it on the pics of your ride and on the top of the front page.

As far as price goes, if it is as clean as you say you could be looking at a price range of 4-10,000. It is all about what you can get and there is not to many people that want the problems that may or may not come with 2 older motors. I have done a full resto as well as Mark Bano and we both have over 17,000 invested.

I will let other put there input in but I would probably try to start at 4500 or so and work from there. Check the transom and the floor. These units leak at the skag on the bottom and there for sometimes get a soft floor in that area. My boat has never need a transom repair but if the bolts were not completely sealed on your uunit then you could get some dry rot in that area.

Where you located at? As far as I know I am the only on the west coast that has
an original dyne with original twins.

Thanks Daniel... Great info! I live in Georgia, south of the ATL. The boat is in the northeast though. The boat belongs to a relative of mine and I have been keeping tabs on it for the past 5 years since they haven't been using it much (got into jet skiis). The lake I lived on was twin rig heaven. I believe we had 10 (or more) in our club (no inboards were aloud on the lake). I remember going to the Hydrodyne plant in Indiana with my Pop to pick ours up in '72. My friend's Dad bought one at the same time and we had the engines professionally mounted (as did the one I buying). They instructed us to reseal them every couple of years, which we did. We never had transom problems, but others on the lake did that didn't maintain them. The engines are a concern. But, I would venture to say they have the hours of '90 engines. And I know they have been very well maintained. Now, the 115's I had on mine were in the shop every couple of years because we ran them extremely hard : ).

Anyway, your value seems right on target. We were talking in the $5K area. They could probably get more, but would like me to buy it. So, it's good to know we're in the ballpark!!!
    Thanks Again,
    Rick

BTW... I'll try to think of some slogans for your tee shirts!

    Rick,

Let me know if you need help with the inlines. I think I can get you together with some people that can help you. If you need help inspecting the boat after you get it home, I am not that far away, (FL).

If you decide not to buy it, let me know.

    Rick and Daniel,

My first Merc was a Mk78A. I just dug out my old master service manual (an original). The last year it lists is 1970. It does show the 115 and 135, but not the 125. If you need info from that manual, I will be happy to provide it.

    Hi Jim,
Thanks a million!!! Where in FL do you live? I lived in Tampa for about 8 years. Went to Univ. of Tampa and was on their water ski team. I don't know the exact years on the engines. They may actually be younger than what I listed. They had one of the engines on their Correct Craft (beautiful teak and mahogany boat) and bought the other 125 to build the twin rig. I remember one had a red background on the engine cover (where it says Mercury) and the other had a blue background. They purchased another red background cover to match. Thanks for the offer to inspect it too. I'll let you know once I pick it up.

The manual does show a 1250SS made in 68-69 which is a 100 cubic inch inline six with 125HP.

I was wondering if anyone would know the value of a 1963, 17ft.hydrodyne with a Mercruiser 300 6 cyclinder with dual carbs. on single axle trailer. This boat is in fair condition. Motor runs good. Interior good along with exterior needing some polishing and buffing.

I can't tell you off hand but I will coontact someone who deals with the older dynes and tell him to check out the pictures. I will post the pictures that you sent me on teh forum for him to look at.
