I have an 87 evinrude 150hp That has sat for almost 10 years. any tips on trying to start her up?Everything looks good.I know the starter works. Carbs and plugs are CLEAN. Any thoughts? Thanks
I have not worked on that particular engine so I am going to give you sort of a generic answer. I would get some of that foamy storage oil that comes in an aerosol can. Pull the plugs and spray some into the cylinders. If the engine has recirc lines to the main bearing areas I would pump two stroke oil into the main bearings. A recirc line is a line from the intake area to the block near the main bearing area. If these lines are rotten, replace them. I think I would replace them on general principles. The motor may not have them, but it probably does. Take the intake silencer off for access to the carbs and spray some of the foamy storage oil into the carb throats while turning it over on the starter with the plugs still out. Put the plugs back in. Change the lower unit oil and the water pump impeller. Make sure your fuel system is clean from the tank to the carb jets. Install a mercruiser type water seperator in the fuel line. It is the type with the spin on filter like an oil filter. You want the smaller one. I would mix the oil double ratio (25 to one). If it has oil injection put 50 to one in the tank in addition to the oil injection and break it in like it was a new motor. If it does not start, check for spark and fuel feed in the carbs just like any other engine. If you want specific advice on that engine, join: http://www.screamandfly.com and ask your question. jim
