I'll probably install a new rub rail when I do a complete restore on this Hydrodyne.

In the meantime, I tried a to clean the rub rail as best as I could.

I had fairly good success using an abrasive bathroom cleaner with bleach and a copper wire pad. I used a palm sander for the more stuborn spots realizing that I'm actually taking off a thin layer of the rubber.

Then the trick (as mentioned above) is to seal the rubber with a quality wax after it's been cleaned.

The palm sander really takes a long time too.

Sorry, I forgot to mention the most important ingredient; LOTS OF ELBOW GREASE!

I wouldn't say I'm restoring the boat at this stage. Perhaps we need a new sectioned titled, "cleaning".

Have you tried Mr. Clean Magic Eraser at all? Maybe try that stuff, it has made anything I have ever used it on come completely clean. There was also this stuff that they sold at the marina for removing mildew from vinyl boat seats. I forget what the make of it was. That stuff would work wonders on removing the black mildew stains from our plastic bumpers mounted on our pier.

I use bleach or pool chlorine for mildew.

I loved the fact that my rub rail on my new 18' was in all black just for all the reasons we have brought up on this topic. When I had my 70s 18' it had the style rub rail that wrapped over the lip of the deck in white, just like alot of you other members out there.

I noticed that only River Rat's 18' and mine are the only two hulls that have this new style rub rail installed. The only difference between his and mine is that my rub rail continued around the rear corners of the transom to where the dip down of the transom was. I don't think I have any good photos showing the rub rail, but maybe Bob or River Rat can take a picture of theirs to show the difference in styles and how it looks on the boat.

Maybe whoever talks to Tom Miller next on the phone can ask him who the supplier of the rub rail is so that people who are doing replacements have an option from the WEFCO 187-1 style.

I have been doing some digging also, and this is the best up close shot I could find of the rub rail.

I prefer the wrap around style to the one I have. Due to allowing club drivers to drive my boat, one of the end caps (plastic now for some stupid reason) has gone missing due to dock bumpage. But here are some pics of how mine is.

Thanks for the advice. I will definitely have my body guyu install the rub rail. Did you use an insert? My current boat is white rail with navy insert. Also, what length did you start with for the 18' boat? Thanks,
