    Well,

Yesterday I installed the throttle and shift cables, removing the lower cowl to do so. While I was in there I was trying to identify where the engine shaft mounted pitot intake tube runs up so I can tie into it. I think I've identified it but can't be sure. It appear to run to a diaphram sensor on the side of the engine, which I'm guessing is where it reads speed for the smartcraft system. If this is the case, I'm assuming that I just splice into that line with a "T" in order to feed my dash mounted speedometer. Does anyone know?

Also - I noticed that there is a fitting on the hose that comes off of the engine mounted oil tank that looks like it should have a rubber hose on it but nothing seems to go to it. There is a crankcase pressure line to pressurize the oil tank and there is the oil line (which connects into one side of the fitting that has the open end on it). Perhaps this open fitting is some sort of pressure relief valve or something but if anyone knows what I'm referring to and can confirm this I'd feel better. I can't find anything that says what it is in the optimax service manual. It shows it in pictures but never says anything about it or whether anything is supppsed to be connected to it.

    Mark,

The brass fitting pointing straight down is a pressure relief. There are 2 oil hoses 1 with a blue strip on it. Make sure you hook up the hoses with the blue strip together. You must also prime the fuel line to the pump 2-3 times or you will burn up your fuel pump. You also have to prime/pressurized the oil system as well using only 2-stroke Opti-DFI Synthetic. I have always primed/pressurized the oil system with a laptop not sure if you can do it with out one.

As for the speedo line I have never T'ed into the line there. I have just disconnected it from the diaphram and made the connection there. I don't think you will get an alarm from your monitor sense the sensor is still hook up.

    Hope this helps
    Edd

Thanks - that helps alot. I'm having the dealer do the priming for fuel and oil and a final inspection/engine run.

What diaphram do you tie in at to pick up the line for the speedometer. That's what I want to do but I just want to be sure I know that is what I'm tying into. I've attached a picture of what I think is the diaphram that senses pressure from the speedometer line coming from the shaft pick-up. It is what my finger is pointing to in the photo. Am I correct that this is what this is, if you know?

    Thanks again!!

Mercury just put up some more smartcraft pages on their site. I think they will help you.

Looks like I got it right. Thanks! Hopefull I can just tee into that line and still get a digital speed readout on the smartcraft monitor while picking up the analog speedo pressure from the shaft pitot line.

I'll check out the info. Thanks for the heads up!
