    My friend and I had to cut off the original VW beam that was on the front since it was bent.

    I notice that you have a one piece steering column. The steering gear box is mounted pretty far forward on the vw. Consider what would happen if you hit something really hard.

    There are fixes for this issue.

    Actually about a foot back from the wheel is a joint, so if hit the joint would be forced the direction of the impact which is usually of to a side. But yes in a perfect forward impact the wheel would come strait back. Plus the connection of the shaft to the box has a urethane break away.
