I just bought a 1984 20' hydrodyne. I am putting a Evinrude 150 on it. I was wondering if the single cable teleflex steering gear box is big enough for the motor.

If you are purchasing the system new, your dealer will be able to tell you if the single cable is enough. If you already have the system, you can check out the teleflex marine web site or call their customer service number (they do have a good customer service line). Have the exact sytem part number you have ready for reference.

I believe most people go for the hydraulic system. But there is a mechanical system that is sufficient. I don't remember which one it is though.

Also, do you have the motor already? If not, there are a few available in the for sale section here.

You will want dual cables or Hydraulic Steering on any V6 in my opinion. Is there anything in there right now? Teleflex makes a dual cable system that bolts onto a single rack helm if you already have a helm.

If it is an 84 it should have the removable dash pod and the non recessed bow light area on the deck. They changed the 20 in 85 to the molded in dash pod and the recessed area for the bow light.

It is 84 dyne,it has the removable dash. There is nothing there but a hole for the steering unit.

I bought a 2000 Evinrude 150 ficht. Hope to have it ready by spring.

I have been running a single cable on my 150 for 10 years on the dealers reccommendation with no problem.

However, most of my running is slow with not much load on the steering.

    The plusses are:

The system has very low friction, it is possible to steer with one hand and it is easy to turn. This makes it nice around the dock and other manuevering.

    The minuses are:

Big time feed back at higher speeds due to the low friction. If the one cable breaks, or the one tiller bolt breaks, the steering is lost.

I would not run a no feed back cable steering because of the extreme friction. The dual cable is nice for safety but also has high friction. The Seastar hydraulic with the 2.4 helm is nice and expensive. It too has only one steering tiller bolt.

I think the seastar is best for a skiboat with 150 hp if you can afford it.

Having seen the results of a V6 on a single cable when torque steer flips a boat, I recommend dual cables or hydraulic.

I think that is good advice.
